Community guidelines

Version 1.0, 2 November 2026. These guidelines apply in the Moonlight app from the Berlin beta on 4 December 2026, and to posts on joinmoonlight.app. Plain English, written for readers whose first language is not English. A German version follows. Contact: hello@moonlightapp.de

In an emergency

Moonlight is information from people, for people. In an emergency, call 110 (police) or 112 (fire and ambulance). The "Alert my Squad" button reaches the people you chose, and nobody else.

Who can join

Moonlight is for women. You tell us your gender once, when you sign up, and we believe you. You must be 18 or older. Each person has one account, under an email address that is theirs. You choose a username; your real name stays with you. Identity verification comes later and is free; a verified account can post to the map.

What you can do here

  • Read the map. Reports from members, local news, and points collected by Plan International in 2020, shown apart and credited.

  • Add a report. What happened, where and when, in four short steps. Your report is anonymous unless you switch your username on for that report. Anonymous means other members cannot see who posted it; Moonlight's moderators can. A moderator reads it before it shows, usually within the hour.

  • Alert your Safety Squad. Up to three people you chose get your location and the time when you hold the alert button. You can cancel within 30 seconds.

  • Find a Sis Haven. A café, bar or shop that signed a commitment to let a person step inside, sit, get water and make a call.

  • Post without an account on joinmoonlight.app. Same rules for writing, read by the same people. A post goes on the map as a pin; your words are never published unless you allowed us to retell them with the details changed.

How to write a report

  • Say what happened, where and when. Use the words on the screen.

  • Describe what the person did and looked like: clothes, height, direction. Words only; no photos.

  • Leave out anything that identifies a person: a name, a face, a workplace, a number plate, where they live, their origin, religion, health or housing.

  • Name the street, the station, the line or the park. A business is named on the map only when it asked to be, as a Sis Haven.

  • Public places only. What happens inside a home or inside a relationship is not for the map. Help for that is at 116 016, the Hilfetelefon, free and around the clock.

  • Report what you saw or what happened to you. A report about something you heard from someone else goes to that person.

  • Describe what someone did, never who they are. A report whose only content is a person's origin, religion, skin colour, clothing, language or disability says nothing about what happened and is not published. Moonlight shows patterns of behaviour; it never shows patterns of people.

What is not allowed

  • Hate against people for their origin, religion, gender, sexuality, disability or age.

  • Harassing, threatening or following a member, on Moonlight or elsewhere.

  • Pretending to be someone else, or using more than one account.

  • Posting anyone's private details.

  • Reports you know to be false, and reports made to harm a person or a business.

  • Using Moonlight to find a date, sex or a customer.

  • Selling, advertising or recruiting.

What a moderator does

Every report is read by a person before it shows on the map. The moderator may delete a detail that identifies someone: a name, a face, a workplace, a number plate, origin, religion, health or housing. Each deletion shows in the report as "[removed by a moderator]". The moderator never adds a word and never rewrites a sentence. If a deletion would change the meaning, the report goes back to you with a proposed text, and you decide: publish it, change it, or leave it unpublished. A report that waits for your answer for 72 hours closes unpublished, and you can send it again.

When a report breaks these guidelines, we may: remove the report; warn you; pause your account for a review, which lifts after 72 hours unless a person has decided; or close your account. A report that targets a group of people rather than describing an event is removed, and sending such reports again closes the account. You are told in writing what was removed, which rule it broke and how to object.

Reporting something, and blocking someone

Under every report there is "Something wrong with this report? Report it". It reaches a moderator, who takes the report down while it is looked at. You can also write to hello@moonlightapp.de. A venue that believes a report about it is false uses the same route.

You can block a member whose username you can see: from their username on a report, or from a Safety Squad invitation. A blocked member cannot invite you and you do not see their username. Blocking is private.

Nobody is punished for reporting, and retaliation against someone who reported is a reason to close an account.

When we contact the police

When only you are in danger, and you can decide and say no, we do not call the police. We help you act. We do call when someone else is in danger, when you cannot decide (unconscious, not answering during an alert, unable to speak), or when the law requires it. We pass on only what the danger needs. Two people at Moonlight agree on every call, and every call is logged.

Objections and appeals

If your report was removed or your account paused or closed, you can object from the message you received or by email. A person who was not part of the first decision looks at it and answers within 72 hours. Decisions follow these guidelines and the law; where they conflict, the law wins.

Your words stay yours

What you write is yours. By posting it you let Moonlight show it to members and keep it for the purposes in the privacy notice. We do not sell it and we do not rewrite it.

These guidelines change

Moonlight is in a closed beta. These guidelines will change as we learn from you. The date at the top tells you which version you are reading; the main changes are listed at the end of the newer version.
