What happened

Six evenings in Berlin.

Retold from stories we collected over the past year. Names have been changed for privacy. Each story is one person’s evening. The map is what she can do with it.

01 FOLLOWED

Pins around U-Bahn and S-Bahn exits, night.

Mara leaves the U-Bahn at midnight. A man asks for her number. She says no. He keeps walking next to her, asking, all the way to her street.

She puts it on the map. Two taps, her name stays private. Now the next person knows what happens at that exit.

02 CATCALLED

Pins on streets, day and night.

On the same street, someone whistles and shouts something about Leyla’s body. She thought it was about her.

On the map she finds other reports on that street. It was never about her. Now everyone can see the pattern.

03 THE TRAIN

Pins along one U-Bahn line.

A man sits next to Jana on the train. He stares, then he talks, then he makes kissing sounds. She gets off one station early.

One report is one bad evening. Ten reports on the same line are a pattern, and a pattern can be changed.

04 THE RIDE HOME

Pins at drop-off points, night.

The driver asks Nour if she has a boyfriend, then if she lives alone, then for a kiss. She says no. It is 3 a.m., the car is moving and he is bigger than her, so she stops saying it.

A friendly driver asks one question. This one did not stop. She reports the ride, pinned where it began, never at her door. The next person reads it before she books.

05 THE CLUB

Pins on venues, night.

Someone put something in Ella’s drink. The staff did nothing. She ended up in the emergency room.

She puts the club on the map. The next person reads it before she goes in, and a place that does nothing does not stay quiet.

06 THE PEOPLE WHO HELPED

Green pins.

Sofia is being shouted at outside a gym. Two women walking past stop and ask her if she is okay. They stay until she says yes.

Asking is enough. Everyone can do it.

You are not alone.

Moonlight puts what other people already know on one map. So everyone can decide for themselves, with the facts. What happened to one person becomes something all of us get to know.

Moonlight is for all of us.

We show what happens, so everyone can understand it and change it. Most people want to help. They just need to know what helps.

For everyone who looks over their shoulder on the way home.
